The Problem in Pittsburgh:

In the city of Pittsburgh, there were very few emergency help systems like those we have today.

If someone was hurt or sick, there wasn't always a fast way to get them to the hospital.
The Solution: Freedom House Ambulance:

A group of brave Black doctors and helpers recognized this critical issue.

They established Freedom House Ambulance to ensure people could get immediate help.

These ambulances were staffed with trained helpers who knew how to care for people en route to the hospital.

The doctors and helpers dedicated themselves to hard work and daily training, learning to use medical tools, assist with breathing, stop bleeding, and even practice carrying people on stretchers.
A Lasting Legacy:

Their pioneering work saved many lives.

The efforts of these Black doctors and helpers from Pittsburgh were instrumental in creating what we now universally call EMS—Emergency Medical Services.
