Kindergarten
- Recognizes their name when written.
- Can decode written words.
- Capitalizes the first word in a sentence and uses ending

- Uses frequent nouns and verbs and can form plural regular nouns
- by adding /s/ or /es/.
- Understands and uses question words such as who, what, where,
- when, why and how.

- accurately (Ex. knowing duck is a bird and learning the verb
- to duck).
First Grade
- Print all upper- and lowercase letters.
- Uses common, proper, and possessive nouns.
- Uses singular and plural nouns with correct verb tense.
- Uses personal, possessive, and indefinite pronouns.
- Uses past, present and future verbs.
- Capitalizes dates and uses ending punctuation.
- Uses context clues to determine meanings of words.
- Understands affixes can change word meaning.
- Identify real-life connections between words and their use
- (e.g., note places at home that are cozy).
Second Grade
- Uses collective nouns (e.g., group).
- Forms and uses frequently occurring irregular plural nouns
- (e.g., feet, children, teeth, mice, fish).
- Uses reflexive pronouns (e.g., myself, ourselves).
- Forms and uses the past tense of frequently occurring irregular
- verbs (e.g., sat, hid, told)
- Can write and rearrange simple sentences.
- Capitalizes proper nouns.
- Uses commas in greetings and apostrophes in contractions and
- to show possession.
- Uses reference materials such as glossaries and dictionaries.
- Learning and uses synonyms.
- Uses context clues to determine word meaning.
Third Grade
- Forms and uses regular and irregular plural nouns.
- Explains the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and
- adverbs in general and their functions in particular sentences
- Uses abstract nouns (e.g., childhood).
- Forms and uses regular and irregular verbs.
- Forms and uses past, present and future verbs.
- Uses correct subject and verb agreement.
- Uses coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.
- Produces simple, compound, and complex sentences.
- Capitalizes appropriate words in titles.
- Uses affixes and context clues to determine word meaning.
- Identifies real-life connections between words and their use (e.g.,
- describe people who are friendly or helpful).
- Distinguishes the literal and non-literal meanings of words and
- phrases in context (e.g., take steps).
- Uses glossaries or beginning dictionaries, both print and digital, to determine or clarify the precise meaning of key words and phrases.
Fourth Grade
- Figure out or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases by using context clues, word parts, and use reference materials.
- Look back at details and examples when reading and then explaining what the text says and draw inferences from the text.
- Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
- Read grade-level texts with accuracy and fluency and understand what was read.
- Write opinion pieces supplying a topic and clearly support a point of view and ideas with reasons and information.
- Write stories by developing real or imagined experiences or events using effective writing techniques, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
- Actively collaborate with partners, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
- Know and use grade level grammar when writing or speaking.
Fifth Grade
- Analyze how a text is structured, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text (e.g., a section, chapter, scene, or stanza) relate to each other and the whole.
- Utilize writing techniques such as, planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.
- Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. Interpret figurative language, including similes and metaphors, in context.
- Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
- Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
- Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
- Write opinion pieces and supporting points of view with reasons and information.
- Collaborate with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
- Summarize a written text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.
- Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.
- Demonstrate 5th grade grammar and usage when writing or speaking. (example: conjunctions, interjections, perfect verb tenses punctuation, prefixes and suffixes, root words.
