Looking for an engaging and efficient way to teach biography writing? The resource "Write A Biography In Less Than A Day! George Robert Carruthers" is a writing activity designed to guide students in grades 3-6 through the process of constructing a short biography essay. This lesson uses the life of the remarkable Inventor, Physicist, Engineer and Space Scientist, George Robert Carruthers, as the subject for the biography.

This activity teaches students several key writing skills:

  • Researching and finding facts.

  • How to sort facts into paragraphs.

  • How to transform facts into sentences.

  • How to embellish sentences using word parts.

  • Sentence and paragraph transitioning.

The lesson provides facts about Mr. Carruthers, including his birth and death dates, early science fair awards, building his first telescope, developing an interest in physics, attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, graduating from Englewood High School, perfecting the ultraviolet camera/spectrograph for NASA's Apollo 16 launch in 1972, creating the Science & Engineering Apprentice program in the 1980s, and being awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 2013 by President Barack Obama. Students will start by using these provided facts and sorting them into categories such as Early life, Education, and Later in life. There is also an option for students to add 2-3 more facts by conducting their own research.

Next, students will transform their sorted facts into complete sentences with a subject and predicate, placing them in time order. They will also embellish these sentences using word examples from included word charts, which cover Adjectives, Adverbs, Pronouns, Conjunctions, and Prepositions.

Finally, students will write their biography using their newly embellished sentences. The biography should consist of at least three paragraphs, each containing 3-6 sentences. The paragraphs will cover George Robert Carruthers' early life, his education, and events later in his life. Students are guided to use transition words from a word chart to ensure smooth transitions between sentences and paragraphs.

This resource supports numerous Common Core Standards for Writing in grades 3, 4, and 5, including standards related to writing informative/explanatory texts, narratives, developing topics with facts and details, using linking words and phrases, providing conclusions, producing clear and coherent writing, planning and revising, conducting short research projects, recalling and categorizing information, and drawing evidence from sources. It also aligns with teaching or reinforcing foundational literacy concepts like Subjects and Predicates, Conjunctions, Interjections, Pronouns, Adjectives, Adverbs, Writing Paragraphs, Nouns, Noun Types, Prepositions, and Sentence Types.
